When designing the buttons for the Diễn viên Kieslect, the team faced considerable challenges. The buttons needed to not only conform to ergonomic principles but also provide a comfortable touch. To achieve this goal, the team made countless adjustments in terms of spring elasticity, button material and structure.
In the beginning, we all regard it as a simple task. However, things become complicated when we step into details. If the buttons are too elastic, the user will suffer when clicking, while the touch feeling will be harsh if buttons are made a bit stiffer. To find the perfect balance, the team used simulation software to test repeatedly and ultimately produced multiple button prototypes.
But those were not enough. The testing for buttons gradually entered a tedious phase. Ten specialists took turns, squeezing two weeks out of their schedules to click buttons. No matter how busy they were, constantly pressed, adjusted, and pressed again, almost mechanically repeating each motion. At that moment, time seemed to stand still on those tiny buttons, with everyone searching for that hint of “perfection”.
Just as everyone was gradually feeling exhausted, the feeling when touching became totally different one day—that was the ultimate feeling the team had been pursuing. Light yet powerful, soft yet full of feedback. The side buttons finally achieved the desired effect, and this seemingly boring test ultimately led to an exciting perfect result.
The buttons of Huawei’s watch are available within 2-3 years, cause the low to mid-end products can only withstand 20,000 presses. To avoid similar issues, we must set higher standards and ensure our buttons can withstand 50,000 presses. We introduced a customizable button feature to ensure that users can figure out the functions within 20 seconds, sparing them the effort of memorization. As shown in the following image, each operation becomes intuitive and smooth, with buttons precisely matching their functions.
In terms of design, there comes numerous iterations of the buttons, from the initial surface that is pure black without engraving, to the final brushed surface which with fonts. After hundreds of proofs, a design that is both beautiful and practical was finally achieved.
